These days everybody use USB drives for transferring files from one computer to another computer or laptop. We don’t even know that USB drives or pen drives have become a part of our daily life. USB drives are available in 1GB to 128GB, Even a research team in China has found a USB drive that can store high amount of data. There are 2.0s which offer speeds up to 10MB/s and USB 3.0 which offer speeds up to 300MB/s.
When we try to copy large files (files greater than 4GB) to a USB drive a pop up shows that
“The file ’file.xyz’ is too large for the destination file system”.
This is because of the default file system used in pen drives. Usually pen drives are formatted with FAT32 file system. FAT32 file system only supports files that have size up to 4GB. For files higher than that size you need to use NTFS or exFAT file system.
Steps to transfer/copy large files to USB drive
Note: All the data inside the USB drive will be lost/ deleted. Please back up the data inside the USB to your PC before following the below steps.
Step 1: Plug the USB drive to the USB port on the PC
Step 2: Open computer or My Computer (or whatever your PC is named) and right click on your pen drive’s name
Step 3: Select Format.
Step 4: Now A pop up window in opened. Choose exFAT or NTFS from the drop down under file system.
Note: We recommend exFAT over NTFS, but might be incompatible with the older versions of operating systems.
Step 5: Check the quick format option.
Step 6: Finally click on start.
Your USB drive will be formatted. Now wait until it completes. Then click OK.
Now you can copy large files (files over 4GB of size to your USB drive).
